Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying put."

The governor responded via social platforms, declaring: "I will not yield. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, military units from Texas had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government advances with its aggressive crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, according to reports. Officials reportedly stated the troops would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in lines. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered no-fly zones over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action targeting the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also issued an directive on that day prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

The governor has charged the president of using troops as "political props" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on Tuesday, he said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and make acceptable the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law restricts the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has stated he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which permits a president to dispatch regular army in states that are unable to put down an insurrection or are defying national authority.

After beginning his new administration, the president has dispatched or mentioned sending troops to at least 10 urban centers, such as major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is necessary to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Data indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in the past few years. In the city, for example, murders were reduced 31% to under three hundred through August, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of troops without an foreign danger.
