The Citizens 3-0 The Red Devils: Lauren Hemp on target in City dominant win.
Similar to the recent storm hit the northern region the night before, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a emphatic three goal victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the WSL pinnacle.
Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United
This scoreline signalled back-to-back WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the league leaders with their championship aspirations severely dented.
Manchester United's ability to balance league and European soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they earned a place in the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they looked fatigued throughout, the landmark win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.
Team Changes
The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.
City, in comparison, have fewer loading worries. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from injury.
Overpowering Start
The trouble started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from Manchester City whose energetic forward line played with and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.
This left the home team in a commanding position and saw the visitors struggling. In advance of this fixture, United had allowed just a handful in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the face of the hosts' creative prowess.
Early Chances
The early indicators came early when Vivianne Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything early on, exploiting the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her passes were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.
United had multiple forays ahead, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. City, on the other hand, commanded the ball, taunting their rivals and trying to draw them out of their structure.
Scoring Spree
They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the far post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's 7th goal from a cross of the season.
They extended their advantage with two more goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the middle from defense, the field opened up for City. The prominent Casparij collected the pass on the right side before delivering a precise driven ball for Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the opportunity to drive a effort home from distance.
After the Break
The primary adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came closest, striking the post, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to produce a single shot on target.
The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to beat any team who placed above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against Arsenal and United to put them in a commanding position after nine games.
